Introduction – The Value of Food
Though food is a basic requirement of life, millions of people every night go hungry. Regrettably, most of us subconsciously waste food and never savor it. This poignant account will teach us to value food and never let it go to waste.
The Story of Rohan – A Boy Who Wasted Food
Living with his family, a young boy named Rohan lived in the quiet Sonapur village. He had all he could ever have wanted—nice food, loving family, and modest clothing.
Rohan did not, however, have a great habit of wasting food. He would consume a little after massaging his plate with great helpings and waste the remaining. Mother will still chastise him with "Food is a blessing. But Rohan never followed through, don't squander it."
The Lesson From a Wise Granddad
Rohan was eager and fascinated. He did concur.
A Visit to the Hungry Children
Rohan observed the children gobbling every last bit. They didn't even waste one tiny seed. Some licked their plates clean; others tucked part of it away.
Appalled, Rohan asked, "Grandpa, why would they be eating like this?"
Granddad said, "These children don't know when they will eat again. Every grain of food is valuable for them."
A Realization That Changed Everything
Rohan felt very guilty at that time. Never considering that someone else might need it, he recalled every occasion he had squandered food at home.
He promised himself on that evening "never to throw food once more." Rather he would only take what he possibly could consume and encourage others to do likewise.
The Village’s Food Donation Drive
Rohan's change inspired his family to plan a food drive. Before long, everybody in Sonapur had food aid, and the whole village was contributing. Rohan's minor adjustment in temperament had a larger impact on his society.
